Description

One of the many events organised as part of the Following the Flame Project which includes exhibitions, publications, films, educational workshops and special events. The exhibitions take the visitor on a fascinating journey from the foundations of the Games in Ancient Greece and the myth of Prometheus stealing fire from the gods (the origin of the Olympic torch); through to their demise when violence tarnished the Olympic ideal of fairplay; to the central role of Britain in the re-establishment of the Olympics in 1896 and in the creation of the Paralympics in 1948; and the very many episodes - some heroic, some tragic - in our later histories. The exhibition gives voice to the visions of our sporting stars (from the 70+ video interviews conducted) and display photographs (many not seen before) of Welsh Olympians and Paralympians, as well as a fine collection of Welsh sporting memorabilia (including Tanni Grey-Thompson’s racing chair, Olympic torches, Olympic and Paralympic gold, silver and bronze medals [including William LeBeau’s Stockholm 1912 bronze], Lynn Davies’ 1964 Ewenny Pottery commemorative mug, and the bathing costume of Irene Steer, Wales’ first female medallist). A new film has been created by composer Andrew Griffiths; Welsh school children have contributed cartoons; and Welsh artists, Lorraine Bewsey and Samuel James Hunt have produced new portraits of Welsh Olympians and Paralympians in a display which will make you feel proud to be Welsh.
